Chapter 21 William

It was so quiet after Mr. Smith shot the zombies. There weren’t even any birds making noise. I wasn’t used to things being this quiet, and it just made me nervous. I never in a hundred years would have pictured myself hunting for zombies on a deserted road with a gun in my hand. But here we were. And it was way too quiet.

We started moving toward the wrecked cars. I could tell everyone else was just as nervous as me, but Danielle looked like she might start crying again, so I made my way over to her and walked beside her. She didn’t say anything, but I could tell she was grateful when she looked up at me.

When we got closer to the wreck, we could see someone in the driver’s seat of the last car to hit. The man wasn’t moving, and we couldn’t tell if he was hurt, dead, or a zombie.

Mr. Smith motioned for us to stay where we were while he went closer to check it out. I turned my back to Danielle and backed up against her, so we could see both directions. When Benny saw what we were doing, he nudged Rick, who nodded. They turned so they were back-to-back like we were. Mr. Smith looked over at us and nodded his head in approval. Then he turned to the car with the person in it.

He tapped on the window’s glass with the handle of his gun. I was trying to watch both Mr. Smith and the empty road in front of me when I heard Danielle gasp, “He’s moving! Is he alive, or is he a zombie?” Even though she whispered it, it came out almost like a shout in the silent road.

I nudged her with my elbow. “Shhh...”

Mr. Smith opened the car door and put his gun against the head of the person in the driver’s seat. The man in the car turned his head toward Mr. Smith, who he lowered his gun. Looking over at us, he motioned with his head for us to come to him. He said, “He’s alive, but he’s hurt. Let’s get him out of here.”

When we got to the car, we immediately saw he was hurt in a couple of different places. It looked like he had hit his head on the steering wheel. The airbag hadn’t worked for some reason, and he had a giant knot on his forehead with the imprint of the steering wheel on it. One of the fingers on his left hand pointed in a very strange direction, and the whole hand was swollen.

The man was conscious, but just barely. His head rolled around on his neck like a bobblehead doll. Mr. Smith hit the button for the automatic door locks and unlocked all the doors. He started barking out orders, “William, come over here with me. Danielle, get in the passenger side and unbuckle him. Benny, go tell Claire and Lorelei to find the backpack with the medication in it and bring it over here.
